CES 2010, LAS VEGAS,
Nevada, January 7, 2010
– Silicon Image (NASDAQ: SIMG), a leader in
semiconductors and intellectual property (IP) for the secure distribution,
presentation and storage of high-definition (HD) content, today announced that
it has shipped over 20 million InstaPort™-enabled port processors into digital
television (DTV) models from leading manufacturers including Samsung, Sharp and
Toshiba. The patent-pending InstaPort
technology, featured in over 125 DTV models worldwide to date, is integrated in
Silicon Image’s SiI9287, SiI9387 and SiI9389 port processors.
InstaPort technology enhances
consumers’ HD experience by eliminating the four to seven second delay when switching
between HDMI®-enabled
devices connected to the DTV. A DTV with InstaPort will work with
any HDMI source device in the market today.
The
proliferation of InstaPort technology has been consumer-driven, with end users
demanding quick access to digital content. In today’s connected home, there are a wide range of
HDMI-compatible source devices including DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players, set-top
boxes (STBs), laptops, mobile devices and game consoles. These devices are connected to DTVs via
HDMI ports, but instead of a seamless user experience, consumers are often
faced with a four to seven second wait time when switching between devices.
“Switching delays with previous generation HDMI
solutions has been one of the sore spots for the CE industry,” said Randy
Lawson, senior analyst of display electronics at market research firm iSuppli. “According to iSuppli’s latest HDMI
technology forecast, the market for HDMI-enabled consumer electronics devices
capable of sourcing or displaying high-definition content is expected to grow
by over 250 percent from 2009 to 2013. This is based on continued demand for HDTVs and a growing
stable of HD-capable source devices. Addressing the issues with source-switching time between the
now ubiquitous HDMI flat panel displays and the growing list of HDMI-enabled
sources is clearly a value-add for CE OEMs.”
Silicon
Image’s InstaPort technology adds intelligence to HDMI-enabled DTV inputs by performing
simultaneous background High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP)
authentication on all connected HDMI-enabled source devices in advance of the
source device actually being used.
This simultaneous HDCP authentication decreases
port switching lag time when reduced switching time counts the most – when the
consumer wants to access content.
“Shipping over 20 million InstaPort-enabled
port processors within a year highlights the success of the technology and the
value it brings to the consumer, experiencing HD without delay,” said Waheed
Rasheed, director of product marketing at Silicon Image, Inc. “Top-tier DTV manufacturers have
recognized InstaPort as a must-have feature and are incorporating the
technology into their 2010 models.”
Port processors are platforms for innovation that offer new features,
technologies and standards for DTV HDMI ports that go above and beyond the
basic HDMI switch function offered by analog switches by:
- Enabling manufacturers to seamlessly add HDMI
1.4 features over existing HDMI interfaces
- Creating differentiation across platforms by
delivering higher performance, features and ports
- Easing integration and lowering risk through
common interfaces such as 12C, SPDIF and Ethernet.
